Dry Shampoo Packaging: A New Approach to Waste Reduction Right Down to the Very Last Drop

Imagine the perfect dry shampoo packaging! It’s travel-friendly & sized for airplanes and high-speed trains. Plus, it looks elegant and doesn’t require shaking. Consumers will love how the packaging helps to reduce waste and save money, all while being super lightweight for easy carrying.

Let’s take a look at the latest case of UDN’s cooperation with a niche sustainable hair care brand in the UK! How does the mist tube solve the pain points of traditional aerosol product packaging while successfully creating the “easy, zero-waste, and revolutionary” style of niche sustainable brand products?

We interviewed UDN CEO & mist tube developer Hubert Wang to delve into the story behind the innovative and eco-conscious mist tube packaging.

What is the inspiration and design intention for the mist tube?

The initial spark of inspiration arose from observing children’s spray bottles. These ingenious designs utilize the bottle’s own flexible structure to swiftly expel liquids, offering a playful and intuitive user experience. We explored the feasibility of adapting this structure to soft tube packaging for portable disinfection and facial moisturizing products.

At the time, mainstream aerosol packaging primarily relied on bulky aluminum cans and spray pumps, prioritizing atomization and volume control. However, these options often proved inconvenient to carry and recycle.

Our goal is to simplify the structure of aerosol packaging while maintaining a delicate spray effect. This was achieved through a more environmentally friendly and efficient design.

How can mist tube design mitigate liquid seepage and overflow, common issues encountered in aerosol products like hydrating sprays and sunscreens?

The mist tube boasts an integrated, streamlined design. The head and body are seamlessly molded into a single unit, ensuring leak-proof performance from the moment you open it. This compact and robust design allows for worry-free travel – confidently toss it in your bag without fear of leaks or damage from accidental bumps.

Furthermore, the mist tube does not rely on metal springs and complex propellants typically found in conventional aerosols. Instead, it leverages a unique head design and an intuitive pinching mechanism to generate a refined and delicate mist. Unlike bottle-type aerosols, the mist tube allows for complete material utilization with clear dosage control, minimizing residue and waste.

The designs are meticulously crafted to seamlessly convey the brand’s core values of “easy, zero waste, and transformation” to users, fostering a sense of relaxation and happiness throughout their product experience.

What Makes Mist Tubes Superior to Traditional Aerosols?

First, the innovative one-piece design integrates the tube head and body, eliminating the need for metal spring components. This allows for the selection of various eco-friendly materials, including sugarcane, for weight reduction and a more sustainable footprint.

Secondly, the absence of flammable propellants enhances safety, making it suitable for air and rail travel without concerns. This universal compatibility with powders and liquids allows for convenient and refreshing sunscreen application, moisturizing, and makeup touch-ups anytime, anywhere. This versatility has become a key selling point for the brand.

Thirdly, by utilizing a single material for both the tube body and head, we achieve a more streamlined recycling process and enhance the overall recycling efficiency.

The brand you collaborated with is a British sustainable hair care brand that focuses on effortless, zero-waste, and transformative products. In your opinion, what value does UDN provide to it?

The mist tube perfectly aligns with the brand’s core values, strengthening its identity and providing a unique narrative for its storytelling. The advertising video showcasing the mist tube spraying dry shampoo was a stroke of genius. Consumers were undeniably surprised.

Traditionally, soft tube packaging is associated with dispensing liquids or gels, not powders. This unexpected application, coupled with the mist tube’s environmentally friendly design, not only meets sustainability demands but also disrupts consumer expectations.

This differentiation creates a unique selling point for the brand, positioning it as a leader in simple and sustainable beauty. Beyond mere functionality, the clever product design allows the brand to tell a compelling story.

Consumers can almost feel the brand’s transformative power, from the innovative packaging to the unique product experience. This demonstrates that packaging materials are more than just containers; they are powerful storytelling tools that can shape brand narratives and even give brands their own distinct identities.
